First off, this attachment will convert your saw into an awkward chainsaw. I say this to remind you that chainsaws do not make pretty cuts. That being said, I use this tool for notching and cutting S.I.P.S. It works very well for this purpose, and I really can't see how a more expensive product would do a job better enough to justify the much heftier price tag.
I installed the Prazi on my Skil "77M" and used it to cut 11 7/8" engineered floor joists to length and square. It also allows me to stack about 5 to 6 2x rafters up and cut the bird's mouth cuts all at once. It worked beautifully. No other "beam cutter" saw could cut that wide of joist in a single pass without cutting from the side of the joist. I did find that the saw causes tear-out at the top of the cut, so it is a good idea to use a utility knife to scribe a line just outside the limits of the cut to prevent that. The chain is essentially a chain saw so the cut is not as smooth as I might like, but, this is a unit for framing not finish carpentry.Once you have installed the unit on your saw, you are able to remove it and re-install it as necessary pretty quickly. However, it does take some time and you should "group" your cuts to reduce the number of "changeovers" you need to make.I found some chain saw bar oil, worked into the chain frequently seemed to help the system run smoother than just lubricating the tip, as recommended in the manual.All-in-all an innovative and well-made product.
We used this to straight cut 6" beams, and 45' angles on 4" planks with ease. It was easy to assemble onto the Skil Saw and handled nicely. However, since it's a chainsaw type system that needs to be oiled occasionally, a bottle with a very fine tip needs to be used to oil the chain sprocket as the oil hole in the arm is quite small. The bottle is not included but should be.Additionally, it would be well worth the additional $20 to get the storage bag since it's shipping box will not last long to store the unit, and with the chain exposed, protection is needed to keep the chain from being damaged during transport and storage.Overall a great, unique product that is reasonably priced. A must for any toolbox.
Hi,I'm building a log home and needed a saw to cutup to about eight inches of pine logs,so when isaw the Prazi beam cutter i thought this is justthe tool i was looking for.I did'nt have the rite saw either so i had to buya new skil mag77 and the combination was great, itis smooth and the cuts are perpect,no vibrationof any kind,a real solid tool built to last a longtime. If you need cuts up to 12in this is your toolbuy it you won't be sorry.
Other reviewers said that you are limited to a few saws and that's bull. After reading other reviews I was afraid to by this but I'm very pleased with the saw. I put it on a new Skil worm drive by simply removing the saw guard from the worm drive saw and attaching the Prazi in minutes. This cuts clean and faster than a 15" saw and rolling the timbers to cut again. GREAT PRODUCT.
